Watchmen: a superhero movie of its own
If we were to make a list of the best superhero movies, we would include it without hesitation The dark Knight, Spider-Man 2 OR Blade 2. We could also add more atypical propositions such as Unbreakable by M. Night Shyamalan. Without to forget Hellboy 2 or even the Batman by Tim Burton. It would already be a nice list. But then it is impossible, in our opinion, not to add it Guardians (2009) by Zack Snyderwhich is perhaps the best we’ve seen in the genre in the late 2000s, with obviously The dark Knight.
Taken fromcomics by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, published by DC Comics, the film is a dark and original proposal as it follows, in 1985, in a dystopian world, superheroes who have retired. But when one of them is ousted, the team must reunite. At the same time, tensions between America and the Soviet Union reach their peak.

The film is carried by a nice cast with Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick WilsonMalin Åkerman, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan or even Carla Gugino. Not the biggest stars, but amazing faces. However, the casting could have been different as David Bowie could have had a role, as he might Keanu Reeves considered for Dr. Manhattan.
Tom Cruise wanted to play Rorschach
But they are not the only ones who were able to upset the casting Guardians. Another superstar, in the person of Tom Cruise, obviously wanted to participate in Zack Snyder’s film. This is what the latter revealed in the podcast Happy Sad Confused by Josh Horowitz, when the latter talked about the film and the absence of a star in the casting, unlike what we have seen since then in superhero films. This is not a criticism on the part of the journalist, who nevertheless believes that it isyour perfect casting to play Rorschach, The Owl, Ozymandias and The Comedian.
Zack Snyder then confirmed that he would have liked to direct Tom Cruise and offer him the role of Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), but the actor wanted his part play Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley), a very dark character, traumatized by her past and usually hiding behind a white hood with continuously changing black patterns (inspired by the Rorschach test). The idea of seeing Tom Cruise in a role like this is surprising and would have been interesting, but Zack Snyder had already made his choice.
Tom wanted to play Rorschach. He clearly could have done it. But we already had Jackie who is incredible. If I hadn’t had it I probably would have thought of Tom. In hindsight it would have been incredible.
