78 days of filming, 200 stuntmen: this scene from the next Mad Max looks crazy

Furiosa: the great return of George Miller and the Mad Max saga

In May 2015, George Miller thrilled all viewers with his film Mad Max: Road Fury, which had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Nine years later, let’s take the same ones and start again: George Miller will return to the Croisette to present (out of competition) his new film from the Mad Max saga, dedicated to the youth of Furiosa, the character played by Charlize Theron in Way of Fury.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world in decline, the film follows the young Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who is captured by a horde of motorcyclists under the command of the fearsome warlord Dementus (played by Chris Hemsworth).

During their journey through the Wasteland, an unforgiving desert, Furiosa and her captors encounter the Citadel, a bastion of civilization under the control of Immortan Joe (played by Lachy Hulme). The meeting between Dementus and Immortan Joe is triggered a fierce struggle for dominance of this chaotic world. It is in this context of war and conflict that Furiosa must face countless trials, desperately seeking a way to return to her original home.

An expected Dante sequence

Mad Max: Road Fury had amazed viewers around the world with its absolutely crazy chase sequences, shot in the middle of the desert, with very few special effects. For FuriousGeorge Miller has, it seems, repeated the feat, as a single sequence required no fewer than 78 days of filming and 200 stuntmen.

It was Anya Taylor-Joy, the star of this new film, who revealed the details of this scene, in the columns of Total film. He confided that an action scene “lasting 15 minutes” required more than two months of filming, and the presence of 200 stuntmen every day. The actress highlighted the importance of this scene to show the skills and courage of his character, which is essential to understanding Furiosa’s resilience and resourcefulness. This is the longest sequence in the film.

After its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15, Furious will be released in French cinemas a week later, on May 22, 2024. The first returns to Cannes will therefore be carefully examined. We will have the opportunity to talk to you about it again.
