Released in 2018, the film Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald it is the second chapter of the series Fantastic animals, part of the Harry Potter expanded universe. Directed by David Yates and written by JK Rowling, this film continues to explore the adventures of Newt Scamander, a British magizoologist played by Eddie Redmayne. The plot is found several years before the Harry Potter eraand immerses viewers in the growing tensions between wizards and muggles in the 1920s.

The film begins with the spectacular escape of the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp (who already appeared at the end of the first film), from the custody of MACUSA (Magic Congress of the United States of America). Grindelwald, whose ideology supports, like Voldemort, the supremacy of wizardsrallies his supporters and wreaks havoc in Europe.

Newt Scamander, aided by his friends and Dumbledore, a young Hogwarts professor (played by Jude Law), undertakes a dangerous mission to stop Grindelwald and prevent his evil plans from fracturing the magical and non-magical worlds.

Grindelwald marks Johnny Depp’s last major blockbuster role. Subsequently he only appeared in independent films such as Waiting for the BarbariansOR Minamata. Then he played Louis XV in the film Jeanne du Barry by Maiwenn.

The actor’s performance in the second Fantastic Beasts film was well received by fans. However, his role in the film was quickly overshadowed by his subsequent personal and legal problems. Indeed, after a highly publicized trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, which raised multiple allegations of abuse on both sides, Johnny Depp was gradually sidelined from Hollywood.

The trial not only impacted his career, but also affected public perception of the actor. Despite his undeniable talent, the studios began to distance themselves and Johnny Depp was finally replaced in the role of Grindelwald by Mads Mikkelsen for the third film in the Fantastic Beasts saga, released in 2022.
