The Blair Witch Project : A reboot that has the original cast react
A few days ago we learned that the famous producer Jason Blum (Blumhouse Productions) would tackle one of the most profitable horror films in history: The Blair Witch Project (1999). In fact, the film was made by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez for just $60,000 and has grossed nearly $250 million worldwide. A crazy soundtrack that can be explained by the concept of the film, a found footage which sees three film students make a documentary on the legend of the Blair Witch. With this approach, The Blair Witch Project it makes the viewer feel as if what they are seeing is real, thus making it terrifying.
Jason Blum will then produce a reboot of this horror classic, which was entitled to a first sequel in 2000 The Book of Shadowsand a second in 2016 with Blair witch. But this announcement did not enthuse Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard, the actors of the first film, who published on Facebook a letter addressed to the Lionsgate studio. A letter in which they express various requests and criticisms of the films from which it derives Blair witchthat have been made without consulting them.
Our movie has been rebooted twice. Both times it was a disappointment to fans, at the box office and by critics. None of these films were made with significant creative input from the original team. As the insiders who created Blair Witch and have listened to what fans love and want for 25 years, we are your best, but so far untapped, secret weapon!
The actors’ requests
The actors go further in their speech believing that the producers of the latest films are only recovering the profits of their work. For them it simply represents “25 years of disrespect“ and methods “disgusting and classless“. Then comes the question of money. The trio’s first request is to receive retroactive and future payment for their work The Blair Witch Project taking the amount that would have been decided by SAG-AFTRA if there had been a union or adequate legal representation during the filming of the film.

But their financial needs aren’t just about them, as Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard would also like to start The Witch by Blair Grant, a $60,000 scholarship paid annually by Lionsgate to a genre director to help him make his first feature film. Finally, they also wish to be consulted for any products derived from Blair witchwhether it’s movies, games, escape gamesetc.
At the moment Lionsgate has not released any comment (via Variety). But the directors and producers of the first film Blair witch Have brought their support for the actorsbelieving he had made a significant contribution to the feature film and its legacy.
While we, the original filmmakers, respect Lionsgate’s right to monetize the intellectual property as it sees fit, we must recognize the significant contributions of the original cast: Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Mike Williams. As the faces of what has become a franchise, their likenesses, voices and real names are inseparable from the Blair Witch Project. Their unique contribution not only defined the film’s authenticity, but continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
