“Most Movies Have Mediocre Effects”: James Gunn Promises Magnificent Superman

THE Superman of James Gunn more handsome than the competition?

James Gunn he really doesn’t have time to be bored right now. Two months ago, the director began shooting the highly anticipated film Supermanscheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2025. At the same time, the filmmaker also began filming the first season of Pacifier. These are therefore two important shots that he must manage at the same time. That doesn’t stop him from getting a little rest whenever he gets the chance. The proof with a recent post he published Discussions. In a photo of him he is seen lying at home with his dog and cat, while in his caption he writes: “Take a break in the best way“.

Following this publication, a subscriber questioned him for the first time about whether he was not filming Pacifier. To which James Gunn replied that he was concentrating that day the assembly of Superman. A phrase that made another user react Discussions, who wanted to know if it was normal for the director to start editing during filming. And this is where the filmmaker’s response is interesting, because he gives details about it his vision of special effects.

When you shoot a film for five months, it’s normal to edit it at the same time. I can reshoot if necessary, but more importantly, I can start passing the footage to the VFX department so that it looks perfect when we finish the film. Most films are released in theaters with mediocre effects because the editing was done in a hurry.

VFX too often disappointing

Too often, in fact, blockbusters arrived in theaters with digital effects that left something to be desired. Yet with monstrous budgets. Let’s think, for example, about The flash, which reached a fairly fabulous level of ugliness. But also to the latest films of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). During the summer of 2022, artists specialized in VFX he had also strongly criticized Marvel Studios. The latter had explained that the workload and deadlines imposed did not allow quality rendering. One of these artists later declared:

Directors like Dennis Villeneuve (Dune, Blade Runner 2049) and Matt Reaves (The Batman, Planet of the Apes) seem to have a penchant for visual effects and this shows in the final product. I can’t say the same thing about Marvel stuff.

A version that was recently confirmed with wonder, whose filming had also put the director to the test. James Gunn is therefore reassuring Superman. Of course, it’s too early to know what the film will be like. But at least the director assures that he wants to accompany his feature film with quality digital effects. We can always take as an example The suicide squadwhich was going quite well at this level.
