Ender’s Game : A science fiction film about the impact of war
In 2013 it was released on cinema screens Ender’s Gamea science fiction film by Gavin Hood (The origins of X-Men: Wolverine) and adapted from the novel of the same name by Orson Scott Card published in 1985. The story is set in a future where humanity faces an alien invasion. After the attack of the Colorado beetles which causes the death of several million inhabitants of the Earth, the world must prepare for war. For what, gifted children they are sent to a military school located in space. The goal of this training is to find the one who will be able to best command the troops finding the best possible strategy.
Among the young recruits there is therefore Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), an extremely intelligent and strategic boy, who soon finds himself at the head of a team. Thus he continues the combat simulations, until the last one, which will make him question his entire journey. Because Ender’s Strategy is not so much a film about space warfare, but rather a reflection the morality of military decisionsabout what is right or wrong in a war and the psychological consequences of such a large-scale conflict.

If at the time Harrison Ford, Viola Davis and Ben Kingsley already had long careers behind them, this was not the case for the main cast members: Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld. Since then both have continued to make films and series. The first, for example, transported Sex education (2019-2023), while the second is now an important face of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) after Hawk eye (2021). Finally, it is worth mentioning the presence of Abigail Breslin, who despite her young age (17 at the time of release) had already appeared in around twenty films.
A box office failure and the author’s homophobic statements
There was a real ambition with Ender’s Game. The desire to offer a blockbuster to the young audience who could then start a franchise. It must be said that the work of Orson Scott Card does not stop at just one book, since the author imagined everything an Ender Cycle. And director Gavin Hood had started writing the script for the sequel. The Lionsgate studio had therefore considered a second film, and even a serial spin-off. Except none of this saw the light of day. The blame comes first its huge box office failure. You’d think that grossing $125 million worldwide wouldn’t be that bad. Except, for a film that cost $110 million, that’s a long way from being profitable.

Ender’s Strategy: How Actors Prepared for Weightless Scenes
The site Loopers had given several possible reasons for this box office failure. Beyond the quality of the film itself, the media remembered the film’s release Ender’s Game had been boycotted by the public due to homophobic remarks made by Orson Scott Card several times in the past. The author, notably, passed an amendment in North Carolina in 2012 aimed at banning same-sex marriage.
Finally, Loopers indicated that this type of so-called young adult production has too rarely been a huge success at the box office. The sagas Dusk, Harry Potter AND Hunger Games ultimately, exceptions. During the same release period as Ender’s Game, The Mortal Instruments: City of Darkness, Wandering souls OR The donor they had not been boxes (The donor was still profitable due to its small budget).
