Knighta cult film by Brian Helgeland
Among the films focused on the Middle Ages, Knight it is one of the most famous titles. Released in 2001, the feature film focuses on William Thatcher, a young squire who assumes the identity of his rich lord after the latter’s death to participate in knightly combats, to the point of alienating Count Adhemar, jealous of his talent . . We find in the cast of this film beautiful people with Heath Ledger, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Paul Bettany, Mark Addy, Alan Tudyk and Bérénice Bejo. The latter had also experienced a complicated recovery at the time.
Many years after its release, Knight is now considered a cult film. Until now, however, she has not been entitled to a sequel. However, if Heath Ledger, the interpreter of William Thatcher, had sadly died after the release of the feature film, its director could have a second work focusing on another character.
Netflix rejected a second film
Brian Helgeland recently gave a long interview to Inversion. The screenwriter and director of Knight he explained that he could make a sequel to the film. Because Paul Bettany and Alan Tudyk, the interpreters of Geoffrey Chaucer and Wat, once proposed to him an idea that he liked and that he himself tried to bring to fruition : “The boys had the idea that William had died in the war. But William had a teenage daughter who wanted to participate in the joust, but she couldn’t because she was a girl. He then went looking for the gang until he found her, and her members ended up agreeing to train her, on the condition that they hide the fact that she was a girl.“
Brian Helgeland then pitched this idea to Sony Pictures, who held the rights Knight. According to him, the studio wanted to make the film with Netflix. But the streaming platform tested the scenario by putting it through its algorithm. Gold, this algorithm estimated that the film would not work if it had been done. Netflix then refused to start development of the feature film.
Much earlier, another sequel could have seen the light
Long before Netflix rejected the proposal imagined by Paul Bettany and Alan Tudyk, a different sequence of Knight could have seen the light of day. Brian Helgeland revealed this during the same interview. The latter explained that he intended to make a second part since the end of filming the first film. This sequel would then have been a pirate story :
The plot revolved around Count Adhemar kidnapping Jocelyn before taking her to Constantinople. They end up as slaves in a galley after their ship is captured by pirates. There is a prisoner on the boat who has a treasure map tattooed on his back, but he continues to be whipped for indiscipline. The characters at the center of the plot then offer to be whipped in turn in place of this prisoner, so that the card is not erased.
Unfortunately, it’s this time Sony Pictures who rejected this idea. Knight it therefore missed several opportunities to expand its universe. At a time when there are so many sequels, it cannot be ruled out that a new story set in the world imagined by Brian Helgeland will see the light of day in the years to come. Until then, you can still (re)watch the film on… Netflix!
