Barbaric : from Disney+ to Netflix
Directed by Zach Cregger, Barbaric was the pleasant surprise of 2022. An original and intelligent horror film that had an unexpected success. With a budget of only $4 million, the film grossed more than 40 million in the United States. In France we were able to discover it on Disney+. An excellent addition by the streaming platform, which however decided to part ways with it. But don’t panic, because the film has found a new home Netflix which is about to include it in its catalogue from May 2nd (under the title VO Barbarian).

As a reminder, Barbaric follows Tess (Georgina Campbell), a woman who arrives in Detroit for a job interview. Since she has to stay in the region for several days, she rents a house in the suburbs. Except that in addition to being in a bad neighborhood, the accommodation actually appears to be already occupied. She thus finds herself face to face with Keith (Bill Skarsgard), who explains to him that the rental platform must have made a mistake. Unfortunately, due to an important convention in the city, all hotels are full. Tess then has no choice but to spend the night with this stranger. A man who will prove fascinating. The real danger be hidden deep in the house…
A very effective horror film
The first interesting element of Barbaric it is his representation of the relationship between women and men. With Tess, Zach Cregger highlights the natural discomfort a woman feels in having to share accommodation with a stranger. And the director also insists on his hesitation when he enters the house. The place itself and the situation are thus established a feeling of anxiety. But the horror goes far beyond that several revelations during the film.

We will avoid saying too much in this article so as not to spoil it, but the sudden change of protagonist in the middle Barbaricwith such an unpleasant and problematic character played Justin long, participates in the discourse of the film. It adds to this a scary creature which risks causing some nightmares for the most sensitive.
In any case, the proposal convinced a large part of the press and public. As for the critics, Barbaric obtained 93% positive reviews ON Rotten tomatoes (71% for viewers) and an average of 4.2/5 on the five newspapers collected by Assigned. And to push the terror just a little further, a video game adaptation is reportedly in development.
