Tonight on TV: Patrick Bruel and Niels Arestrup shine in this thriller inspired by true events

A brilliant face to face

In 2021, Bernard Stora will direct the psychological thriller based on a screenplay he wrote together with journalist Pascale Robert-Diard. Villa Capriccio. Freely inspired by true events, this one thriller about the troubled association between a famous lawyer and a powerful man was released anonymously and attracted only 125,407 spectators in theaters. If success was not achieved, Villa Capriccio at least it has a pair of brilliant actors directing its twisted plot: Patrick Bruel and Niels Arestrup.

Niels Arestrup undresses

In front of Patrick Bruel, who plays inside Villa Capriccio the cynical and manipulative businessman Gilles Fontaine appears particularly at ease in this incarnation, using his natural charm and devastating smile to lure the famous lawyer Luc Germon, played by Niels Arestrup, into his net. If Patrick Bruel succeeds with his soundtrack, we especially remember the performance of Niels Arestrup, an actor accustomed to dark interpretations. Of course we remember this The beat that my heart skippedor even inside A prophettwo great films by Audiard in which he shines in ambiguous father figures.

If in Audiard it is an instrument of the unfolding drama, it is inside Villa Capriccio the one on whom the tragedy falls. In this business of fraud, which he initially believes to be dominated by his intelligence, he ultimately finds himself used and trapped. A new tragic trajectory for the actor, in which he reveals himself extraordinarily touching.

Inspired by mysterious true events

The story of Villa Capriccio it’s original, but it’s openly inspired by the death in 2013 of the lawyer Olivier Metzner, found drowned off the coast of his island in Brittany. The latter, a powerful and very influential Parisian lawyer, had had an intimate relationship with Alexandre Despallières, a criminal suspected of several murders. Justice, after the autopsy and the discovery of a letter from Olivier Metzner explaining his actions, concluded that it was suicide and closed the investigation into his death. Bernard Stora explained, regarding this story created with the journalist specializing in legal affairs Pascale Robert-Diard:

“I must say that I was torn between the desire to collaborate again with Pascale, who has a very fine and acute gaze on today’s world, and a sort of personal discomfort in tackling a topic too close to reality. Shyness or modesty — I don’t I like to intrude into people’s lives, I feel forced, I prefer to imagine it. I absolutely couldn’t see myself investigating Olivier Metzner, doing research, questioning those close to him, etc. We then left, Pascale and I – joined shortly afterwards by Sonia Moyersoen – for invent a completely original story and characters.”
