Tonight on TV: This action movie is one of Chris Hemsworth’s worst failures

Red Dawn: a complicated remake for Chris Hemsworth

Red Dawn is an American action film directed by Dan Bradley, released in the summer of 2013. This feature film is a remake of the 1984 film of the same name by Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen, which depicted the American resistance against a Soviet invasion. The 2013 version brings a modern twist, with Chris Hemsworth in the lead role.

The plot is set in the city of Spokane, Washington, where a group of young Americans suddenly find themselves facing a military invasion orchestrated by North Korea. North Korean forces manage to capture several American cities in a coordinated attack, creating a situation of chaos and panic throughout the country. The young characters, led by Jed Eckert, a former marine played by Chris Hemsworth, decide not to stand by and resist the occupation.

Jed forms a resistance group made up of his younger brother Matt (played by Josh Peck), his girlfriend Toni (Adrianne Palicki) and other young people from the town. Together, they organized themselves under the name “Wolverines” and began to lead guerrilla operations against the occupying troops. Their mission is to sow confusion among the enemy ranks, weaken their operations and, if possible, liberate the city.

A bitter failure at the box office

Despite great promise and one main star, the film Red Dawn it was a total commercial failure at the worldwide box office. So, on a budget estimated at $65 million, the feature film starring Chris Hemsworth only grossed $51 million worldwide. In France the film was only in theaters for three weeks and attracted only 50,000 spectators. This is the worst rating for the actor made famous for his role as Thor in the MCU.

As for reception, the film was panned by critics before its release. From the viewers’ point of view, if we are to believe our colleagues’ ratings, it was just averageAlloCiné (1.5/5 among the press and 2.5/5 among the spectators). We can thus read among the opinions left by viewers:

A nice big turnip

Despite everything, honest entertainment

A film that doesn’t even deserve a DVD release

An EXCELLENT action/war film the likes of which we too rarely see.
