The widow Couderc : a psychological drama in the countryside of the 1930s
After realizing Cat (1971), Pierre Granier-Deferre continued filming The widow Couderc (1971). The opportunity for the director to find Simone Signoretwho had impressed him in his previous film, before directing it for the third and final time The North Star (1982). The director joins the immense actress with another extremely popular face at the time, Alain Delon (which he will also direct three times). An exceptional duo to carry forward this psychological drama Rural France in the 1930s.
In The widow Couderc, Alain Delon plays Jean, a mysterious young man who arrives in a village in Burgundy. There he meets the widow Couderc (Simone Signoret), an elderly woman who is trying to maintain her farm. She agrees to hire Jean to help her on a daily basis. She doesn’t know that the boy actually is hunted by the police, and she quickly falls in love with him. Except that the latter falls under the spell of his young niece, Félicie (Ottavia Piccolo), and that the widow Couderc’s hateful in-laws are quick to report him to the police. In their last moments together, the widow will however reveal her feelings to Jean.

Alain Delon and Simone Signoret in osmosis
Adaptation of the novel of the same name by Georges Simenon, The widow Couderc it’s interesting in more ways than one. First of all from the representation of the relationship between this mature woman and this young man who 15 years younger than her. Pierre Granier-Deferre draws something very moving from it, because it is about two characters apart, who suffer, and who suffer the wickedness of others. It is this relationship with the villagers that unites them and makes them so empathetic. Furthermore, the realistic depiction of this 1930s rural setting is a great success. Whether it’s the villagers and the gossip or the settings. These were also found in Burgundy-Franche-Comtéwith many scenes filmed in Cheuge, Côte-d’Or.
Pierre Granier-Deferre’s proposal was nevertheless convincing at the time as the film had attracted attention more than 2 million viewers in theaters (via Box office history). A solid score certainly obtained by the presence of the stars Simone Signoret and Alain Delon, who have a real osmosis in this work. Furthermore, two years later The widow Coudercthe duo found each other again The barns burned (1973). Years later, in 2018, the actor praised the actress during the show Tea or Coffee (video below).
