Suicide Squad: a commercial success but very negative feedback
When the project of Suicide squad (2016) was announced, hopes were high. The idea of bringing together a gang of supervillains forced to work together to take on a larger enemy, all under the direction of David Ayer, was appealing. Even more so with this impressive cast, made up in particular of Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne. The result, however, proved to be very disappointing. The fault, according to the director, lies in the editing carried out by the producers which does not correspond to his vision.
Suicide Squad then received very negative feedback, both from the press and the public. However, the film remains one of the biggest successes of the DCEU (the DC Extended Universe). With beyond $749 million collected all over the world, the feature film ranks fourth in this ranking Aquaman ($1.1 billion), Batman vs. Superman ($874 million) and Wonder Woman ($823 million).
Karen Fukuhara’s discovery first The boys
We can therefore say that the blockbuster still left its mark. And while it didn’t necessarily help the careers of already recognized talents like Will Smith or Margot Robbie, we can estimate that it was a small boost for some less popular supporting roles. We think above all about actress Karen Fukuhara who plays Katana in the film and for which it was her first film role. The actress then remained in the superhero genre by becoming the face of Kimiko in the series The boys (since 2019), which is a hit on Prime Video. However, the actress could have had some serious competition to play Katana.
Indeed, another talented actress could have played the masked heroine who fights with a saber. This is Anna Sawai, who after starring in the series Giri/Haji AND Pachinkoor even inside Fast and furious 9 (2021), really blew up on Disney+ with Shogun. It was after the last episode of the show aired that the actress returned The Hollywood journalist about his missed hearing Suicide squad. Not missed, but definitely missed.
Before ShogunAnna Sawai could have played Katana
Anna Sawai was part of it at the time by the J-pop group FAKY (from 2013 to 2018). While she wanted to take some time off to audition Suicide squadhis manager told him forbidden to participate.
When a big audition came up for Suicide Squad and the directors were “looking for a Japanese girl,” I said to myself, “This is my chance!” I went to my manager and he said, “You can’t audition.” They basically told me that if I was gone for more than a month, the (other FAKY members) wouldn’t have to do anything. I protested that he would help the band if I got the role, but the answer was clear.

Anna Sawai went further to explain that she felt like she was “tied up.” So she had to do it wait until your contract ends with the group to finally launch himself into the acting profession. A blessing in disguise since his performance in Shogun was applauded. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see more of her in the years to come.
