“There are no excuses”: George Miller talks about the intense filming of Mad Max Fury Road between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy

Mad Max Fury Road: the violent argument between Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron

In February 2022, a journalist revealed that the filming of Mad Max: Road Fury by George Miller was the scene of a violent showdown between the two protagonists of the film, Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. The latter, in fact, constantly arrived late on set. While the actors had to be up and running at 8am, Tom Hardy, clearly not a morning person, never arrived before 11am. A behavior that infuriated Charlize Theron, always punctual, and which almost triggered a violent physical altercation between the two.

So, a member of the technical team remembered it during the filming of an important scene in the film, Charlize Theron was ready to shoot at 8 in the morning, in costume and makeup, while Tom Hardy arrived only three hours later, with a nonchalance that put the interpreter of Furiosa out of her mind. She shouted at him, began to insult him, and between the two stars a violent argument almost degenerated, so much so that Charlize Theron then had a producer always at her side.

George Miller reacts

While he will present his new film from the Mad Max saga dedicated to the young people of Furiosa this Wednesday 15 May at the Cannes Film Festivaldirector George Miller spoke about the tense filming of Fury Road on the microphone of The telegraph. She said that the feud between Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy was essentially due to the fact that they were both “diametrically opposed artists”.

Tom had a bit of fragility in him, but also a brilliance to match, and whatever he was going through at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer.,” George Miller said, confirming rumors that Hardy’s delay had created tension between him and his co-star.Charlize, on the other hand, was incredibly disciplined – an expert dancer, which was reflected in the precision of her performance – and was always the first on set.,” He added.

I am optimistic“, Miller continued, “so I saw their behavior as a mirror of that of their characters, where they had to learn to cooperate to ensure each other’s survival. That said, there is no excuse for these disruptive behaviors, and I think there is a tendency in this industry to tolerate these inconveniences under the guise that they are the price of great performance, when they could be avoided.
