The Hours: from novel to film

The hours is a 2002 drama, directed by Stephen Daldry and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Michael Cunningham. The film highlights the intertwined lives of three women, in three different eras, each grappling with existential and personal dilemmas, while being connected by Virginia Woolf’s cult literary work, “Mrs. Dalloway“published in 1925.

The plot of the film revolves around three parallel stories of women, in three different eras. We follow Virginia Woolf (played by Nicole Kidman), who writes “Mrs. Dalloway“In the 1920s while battling depression. Finally, the third narrative line is set in contemporary New York, where Clarissa Vaughan (Meryl Streep) organizes a party for her poet friend Richard (Ed Harris), suffering from AIDS, and experiences a day that strongly recalls the plot of “Mrs. Dalloway“.

An Oscar for Nicole Kidman

Virginia Woolf, a key literary figure, struggled throughout her life with mental illness, including depression and bipolar disorder. Her novel”Mrs. Dalloway” is considered a reflection of one’s experiences and internal torments. Virginia Woolf first wanted to title this novel “The hours“.

In the film, the writer’s character is shown as she writes this novel, a process that allows her to explore and express her inner demons. This personal struggle of Woolf represents the central core of the film, connecting the three distinct narratives through themes of psychological suffering, identity and the search for meaning.

The performances of the three lead actresses were widely praised by critics. Nicole Kidman, unrecognizable as Virginia Woolf thanks to a prosthetic nose and a physical transformation, received the Oscar for best actress for her performance.
