With Carmen, an adaptation of Bizet’s opera, Peter Brook signed his first collaboration with screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière. They are still working together on the Mahabharata (1988), a pharaonic project that tells the story of the painful birth of the world according to one of the founding texts of Hinduism, consisting of 100,000 stanzas divided into 18 chapters. Originally edited for the theater, the work was later adapted into a 3-hour film version and over 5 hours for television.
