Avatar: The Way of Water is available on Disney Plus
Seventeen months after its release in theaters, Avatar: The Way of Water is finally available in France on a streaming platform. Disney Plus subscribers can return to Pandora from May 17, to their great joy, after the immense success of the second part of the Avatar saga, third biggest hit of all time at the global box office, despite a huge budget estimated at between $350 and $400 million.
Avatar: The Way of Water picks up the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), now parents of four children: Neteyam, Lo’ak, Tuk and their adopted daughter Kiri, played by Sigourney Weaver. The couple lives peacefully in the rainforest of Pandora until new human threats ariseputting their existence and that of their people at risk.
The Resource Development Administration (RDA), a human organization exploiting Pandora’s resources, returns to the planet with greater force, seeking to colonize Pandora to save humanity from the dying Earth. Jake and his family are forced to flee their home and seek refuge with the Metkayina clan, a Na’vi tribe that lives in marine coral reefs. This clan, led by Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) and his wife Ronal (Kate Winslet), is initially suspicious of the newcomers.
The plot revolves around the Sully family’s integration into this new aquatic culture, where they learn to master underwater survival techniques and interact with local marine wildlife, including the majestic sea creatures called Tulkun. Jake and Neytiri’s children face their own challenges, including establishing relationships with the young people of the Metkayina clan and discovering their own identities and strengths.
Meanwhile, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), resurrected as a Na’vi avatar, returns with a personal vendetta against Jake.
A visually stunning second film
James Cameron, known for pushing the technical boundaries of filmmaking, has once again innovated Avatar: The Way of Water with unique underwater motion capture technologies. The production required the construction of a huge swimming pool at Manhattan Beach Studios in California, allowing you to recreate realistic ocean conditions. This pool, approximately 37 meters long, 18 meters wide and 9 meters deep, could hold more than 250,000 liters of water, or approximately 946.35 cubic meters, allowing realistic waves and currents to be simulated for the scenes.
Underwater motion capture was used for the first time, requiring the cast and crew to hold their breath for long minutes (which led to Kate Winslet breaking a breath-holding record) to avoid air bubbles, which would have interfered with the motion capture markers. On top of this, virtual reality (VR) technologies were used to allow James Cameron and the cast to view and interact with Pandora’s virtual environments in real time, providing an unprecedented sense of scale and immersion.
Avatara3currently in post-production, it will be released in theaters in December 2025.
