‘Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical’ to have its world premiere at the London Film Festival

Matilda the musical by Roald Dahl will open this year’s BFI London Film Festival.

The annual festival, which runs October 5-16 and is organized in partnership with American Express, unveiled its opening night gala on Thursday. Matilda The world premiere will take place at London’s Southbank Center on 5 October, “before Sony Pictures UK and TriStar Pictures release the film exclusively in cinemas on 2 December in the UK and Ireland,” organizers said. “The filmmaker and cast are expected to attend, and there will also be a simultaneous preview screening of the film in multiple UK cinemas.”

The film stars Emma Thompson, Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, Sindhu Vee and features Alicia Weir as Matilda. Netflix will release it worldwide, except for the UK and Ireland, this Christmas season.

The film is described as “an inspiring musical story about an extraordinary girl who discovers her superpower and shows remarkable courage against all odds to help others change their stories while taking control of her own destiny”.

“What a delight to open this great film festival with music, dancing, green hair and chocolate cake,” said filmmaker Matthew Warchus. “It is truly an honor to share this fun and empowering story of one girl’s courage and compassion at such a prestigious event.”

Tricia Tuttle, director of the BFI London Film Festival, added: “Like many people who were lucky enough to see it, I am a huge fan of this original stage musical, with brilliant music by Tim Minchin bringing new depth to the children’s classic. . literature. Along with screenwriter Dennis Kelly, Matthew Warchus deftly adapted his own work for the screen with absolute gusto and taste. And what a cast: Alicia Weir is a revelation as Matilda; Emma Thompson is a terribly obnoxious trunchbull, and Lashana Lynch’s Miss Honey will melt your heart. We are delighted to present the world premiere of this outstanding musical film for all ages on our opening night and bring it to audiences across the UK with Sony Pictures. It’s a moving and uplifting story about uniting and fighting the bullies of the world, even when it seems terrible.”

The main character of the story is Matilda Wormwood (Weir), “a little girl with great curiosity, a sharp mind and a vivid imagination, and the worst parents in the world”. While her parents (Graham and Riseborough) are “content with pointless television and silly money-making schemes, she enjoys getting lost in the pages of her favorite books. Where they are loud, selfish and unscrupulous, she is a silent observer who watches small acts of rebellion and revenge. “

When she meets her inspirational teacher, Miss Honey (Lynch), Matilda perks up and starts making up her own stories. “Excited to attend Crunchem Hall, Matilda is shocked to discover that the school is a terrifying and oppressive place, presided over by the huge and evil Miss Trunchbull (Thompson). In addition to gentle Miss Honey, the bright lights among the abominations are story-loving librarian Mrs. Phelps (V) and Matilda’s new school friends.

The film was produced by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner for Working Title, John Finn and Luke Kelly for The Roald Dahl Story Company. Includes original music and lyrics by Minchin.

The BFI London Film Festival will announce its full lineup on 1 September.
