The Latin Recording Academy® announced that Carlos Vives will be the person of the year 2024for his career spanning more than three decades as a singer and songwriter, as well as his ongoing commitment to environmental and social initiatives.
“Carlos Vives is one of the most prolific and beloved artists of our time, whose commitment to Latin music and support for new generations personifies the values of our Academy,” said Manuel Abud, CEO of The Latin Recording Academy.
He added: “We honor him as Person of the Year for his vast contributions to our musical heritage and for his many philanthropic initiatives. »
For his part, Vives declared: “I am honored and thrilled to have been chosen as the 2024 Person of the Year by the Latin Recording Academy.. It is the reward for an authentic journey, a wonderful team and, above all, it is the recognition of the musical minds of our Latin American diversity. “These spirits taught us to love and enrich our language, to take care of it and respect it in order to exalt humanity with it.”
With more than 30 years of careerCarlos Vives is one of the most respected figures in Spanish music, pioneering a new Latin American sound that redefined traditional Colombian vallenato by incorporating pop and rock.
He is an 18-time Latin GRAMMY winner and a two-time GRAMMY winner (the first Colombian to win the latter award) with over 10,000 million views across digital platforms, 20 million albums sold, and hits like “La gota frida”, “Pa’ Mayte”, “The land of oblivion”, “Fresh fruit” and “I am born again”.
Vives will be in the spotlight at a special gala filled with renowned music stars as part of the 25th anniversary of the Latin GRAMMYs®.
The moving tribute concert will include versions of his famous repertoire performed by a number of notable artists and friends. Details of the much-anticipated event, which will take place during Latin GRAMMY® Week 2024 in Miami, will be announced at a later date.
