Ingmar Bergman incredulous receives a television adaptation by Swedish director Tomas Alfredsson (Private Spy Tinker Tailor, Snowman), the Swedish public broadcaster SVT and the Danish production company Miso Film (Netflix’s ᲬVima), part of Bertelsmann-owned RTL Group Fremantle, opened on Monday.
They are set to co-produce the drama series, with Alfredsson in charge of directing all six 45-minute episodes and Norwegian Sarah Johnsen (July, 22) to write the script.
The project explores the relationship between passion and love through the erotic triangle. “David falls in love with the wife of his best friend Mark, the beautiful Mariana,” according to the plot synopsis. “David and Mariana’s love story has painful consequences for both families. Heroes are driven by passion, jealousy, betrayal and love.”
“Sometime in the winter of 2001, I got in touch with Ingmar Bergman and asked if I could reinterpret his story. At first he said it sounded like a ‘drunk idea,’” Alfredson said. “But the more we talked about it, I thought it sounded ‘terribly exciting’ and ‘pretty badass’.” He continued, “Now it’s finally time to film Ingmar Bergman’s shocking love triangle drama television series. It’s hard to see you facing a greater challenge, and I promise to tip my hat to what was and raise my hand to what will be.
Johnsen shared: “It is inspiring to develop, surprise and expand on Bergman’s text, which through complex characters wields powers greater than themselves. Working with Tomas Alfredsson makes writing a party and it feels like we’re creating the biggest TV drama of all time.
“Bringing together two creative powerhouses like Sarah Johnsen and Tomas Alfredsson with Ingmar Bergman’s unique and timeless text is very exciting,” said Anna Kronman, Director of Drama at SVT. “It is also an example of the ambitious projects that we at SVT Drama and the public service in general must undertake in the future.”
Peter Bose, CEO and producer of Miso Film, added: “I vividly remember Ingmar Bergman’s adaptation of Liv Ullmann. incredulous”, shares that “I was very impressed when I saw the film at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000”. He added: “incredulous It’s a timeless story about love and jealousy, especially the feelings you get when you’re in love.”
