After $600 million at the box office, this Disney princess returns in a sequel that promises to be sublime

Moana 2 will be the Disney of Christmas 2024

The first movie Moana, released in 2016, was a triumph for Disney. The film introduced us to Vaiana (Moana in the original language), an intrepid young Polynesian who set off in search of the demigod Maui to save her island. The film captivated global audiences and grossed money more than $640 million at the box office. It has established itself as a modern Disney classic. More, Moana has found a new life on the Disney+ platform, accumulating one billion hours of viewing worldwide in 2023.

Originally developed as a television series, the sequel to Moana was reformatted into a film after extensive feedback and analysis from the creators. Disney announced this transformation during its first quarter 2024 financial report. David G. Derrick Jr., making his feature directorial debut, takes the reins of this ambitious project and succeeds John Musker and Ron Clements.

Moana 2 is expected in cinemas on November 27, and will therefore act as a Disney Christmas.

A new sea voyage is expected

In Moana 2, the young woman once again answers the call of the ocean. Three years after the events of the first film, she receives an unexpected call of his navigator ancestors. This message pushes her to embark on a new adventure, this time towards the distant and dangerous seas of Oceania. Moana, along with a team of unlikely sailors, will have to brave treacherous waters and long-forgotten lands to save her people.

Maui, still voiced by Dwayne Johnson in the original version, joins Moana in this quest, maintaining his charisma, his strength and his humor. Obviously Moana’s best friends, namely Pua the pig and Hei Hei the chicken. In the trailer, Maui calls them “boat snacks.”
