Polisse: a shocking film by Maïwenn
Polish, directed by Maïwenn released in 2011, is a French drama that delves into the heart of the Child Protection Brigade (BPM) in Paris. Co-written by Maïwenn and Emmanuelle Bercot, this feature film presents cases inspired by real events handled by this specialized police unit.
The film follows the daily lives of BPM police officers, played by an impressive cast that includes JoeyStarr, Marina Foïs, Karin Viard, Nicolas Duvauchelle and Maïwenn herself. Officers must handle sensitive cases of child abuse, pedophilia and child abuse as they juggle their personal lives often tumultuous. Mélissa, played by Maïwenn, is a photographer sent to document the unit’s work, thus offering an outside perspective and an added dimension to the story.
Polish stands out for its realistic and raw approach to the daily lives of BPM police officers with sequences that are sometimes difficult to watch when it comes to cases of pedophilia or child rape. The film also highlights lighter moments within this tight-knit group.
Polish received thirteen nominations at the 2012 César Awards and won the César for Best Editing for Laure Gardette and Yann Dedet, as well as the César for Most Promising Actress for Naidra Ayadi. Maïwenn also received the Jury Prize at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. In theaters, the film attracted more than 2.4 million viewers
A shocking ending
The end of Polish is particularly striking and left a lasting impression on viewers. The film ends in a dramatic and unexpected way with the scene in which Iris, played by Marina Foïs, defends herself from a window of the police station. Iris, just promoted to group leader, opens the window under the pretext of being hot and throws herself into the void in front of her horrified colleagues.
Iris’s desperate gesture highlights the unbearable pressure and isolation felt by BPM police officers who they individually struggle against their own demons, without always finding help or understanding among their peers. Iris, in particular, illustrates this paradox: a competent and dedicated woman, yet deeply affected by the violence and human misery she encounters every day. This gesture was inspired by cases of suicide among BPM police officers.
