More, Ice road can count on an effective scenario that attracts its inspiration from a great French film. In fact, the story takes place in the Canadian Far North. When a diamond mine has just collapsed and trapped thirty miners, a rescue mission is organized. To help them it is necessary to transport specific equipment to the site of the tragedy. A team of truck drivers (including Laurence Fishburne and Amber Midthunder) will then have to take three trucks to the mine. But for this, they will need it cross 500 km across Lake Winnipegfrozen this time of year.

Air of déjà vu

It is therefore the story of an almost suicidal mission which involves a dangerous crossing for the drivers of these heavy vehicles. A concept that recalls the excellent The wages of fear (1953). In this film by Henri-Georges Clouzot, the plot takes place in Central America and sees an oil well catch fire. A company then offers $2,000 to four men to drive two trucks full of nitroglycerin. Since the road is dangerous and the explosive is particularly unstable, their chances of success are very slim…

Years later, William Friedkin in turn made an adaptation of Georges Arnaud’s novel (1950) – on which it is based The wages of fear -, with The convoy of fear (1977). Then, in 2024, Netflix came out a new version signed Julien Leclercq, with Franck Gastambide and Alban Lenoir. Officially, Ice road it is not a remake of these films, but the director has made no secret of being inspired by them. Added to this is the novel Of mice and men by John Steinbeck, another important influence for Jonathan Hensleigh.

A sequel in preparation

However, the filmmaker’s proposal was effective enough to attract the public. Ice road was released in August 2021 in French theaters and only attracted 80,000 viewers. But abroad the film benefited releases on streaming platforms. On Netflix in the US and on Prime Video for the UK. So even though the film didn’t make much at the worldwide box office (only $7.5 million), the producers felt there were enough people interested in wanting to see it. develop a following. In February 2024, we learned that Liam Neeson would be reprising his role Ice Road 2: Road to Heaven together with Fan Bingbing. This time, it is on a bus headed to the top of Everest that the hero will find himself when a group of mercenaries attack him and other tourists… The film does not yet have a release date, but will be available on Prime Video in France .
