The Acolyte: how much is the new Star Wars series on Disney+ worth?

The Acolyte : What is this new Star Wars series?

When the project was announced The Acolyte, there was real curiosity. We were promised that finally a Disney live action series would offer something new and significantly distance itself from the already known events. The history of the series Star Wars to take place 100 years before George Lucas’ films, in the era of the High Republic (period covered in several novels). These are therefore new characters for an audience that would have been satisfied with feature films and serials. At the same time reducing the fan service, which is a little too present given that the license was bought by Disney.

Created by Leslye Headland, The Acolyte follows a group of Jedi led by Master Soi (Lee Jung-jae). His mission is to find Mae Aniseya (Amandla Stenberg), a former apprentice accused of killing a Jedi. But the latter could actually be the victim of manipulation by a dark enemy who has everything of a Sith… Although we were able to discover the first four episodes of The Acolyte, we will say no more about the story imagined by Leslye Headland. Especially because after these episodes many mysteries remain a fantastic cliffhanger that ends episode 4.

A series that lives up to expectations

This first part of the season is very promising. Firstly from the development of the relationship between Mae and Master Solwho appear as the two main characters of this series. Amandla Stenberg turns out to be very convincing in this role that has everything to please the audience. For his part, South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae seems a little less comfortable with Korean productions. Around them, Jecki Lon (Dafne Keen) and Yord Fandar (Charlie Barnett) remain more in the background, but benefit from the charisma of their interpreters.

Visually, The Acolyte is at the peak of production Star Wars fromDisney+. But above all there is the sensation of rediscovering something from the prelogy with various settings (Coruscant, Carlac, Brendoc) that follow one another. The story also has a good pace, where other series have stretched out without having much to tell (like Obi Wan OR The Boba Fett bookthat lacked strength). On his part, The Acolyte favors a certain simplicity, trying to reach the public by dealing sibling conflicts and teacher/student relationships. We’ll have to wait to see more to know how far the overall story goes The Acolyte it is relevant.

Then there remains the elaboration of the action. And it’s there The Acolyte convinces morewith an obvious prejudice, without distorting Star Wars. From the first meeting you can feel the influence in the choreography (all things considered) Asian cinema AND Wu Xian Pian AS Tiger and Dragon (2000) or The secret of the flying daggers (2004). References assumed by Leslye Headland, who also had in mind The 7 Samurai AND Kill Bill (see our interview soon). A way for her to unite the legacy of Star Wars (influenced from the beginning by The 7 Samuraiamong others) and a form of modernity to be born a fresh and pleasant work to follow.

The Acolyte can be discovered on Disney+ from June 5th
