Over three billion at the box office: this great dystopian saga will return in 2026

Hunger Games: a new novel will be released in 2025

The dystopian saga Hunger Games began in 2008 with Suzanne Collins’ first novel. Two more followed, in 2009 and 2010.

The plot takes place in the fictional nation of Panem, located in North America. Panem is made up of the wealthy Capitol and twelve poorer districts. Every year, the Capitol hosts the “Hunger Games,” a televised event in which one boy and one girl from each district are chosen to fight to the death. Katniss Everdeen, a teenager from District 12, volunteers to take the place of her younger sister, Prim, in the 74th edition of the games. Alongside Peeta Mellark, another tributary of District 12, Katniss becomes a symbol of resistance against the oppression of the Capitol.

After the worldwide success of these novels, a film adaptation was launched in 2012 with Jennifer Lawrence in the role of Katniss, then a prequel saw the light in 2023. Overall, the film saga has brought more than three billion dollars at the global box office. And it’s far from over. In fact, Suzanne Collins will be releasing a brand new novel in March 2025 titled “Harvest Dawn” (which could be translated as “Dawn of the Harvest”).

A film already announced for 2026

This fifth novel will take place forty years after the events of the last work, The Rime of the Serpent and the Songbird. We will then follow the 50th Hunger Games, which ended with the victory of Haymitch Abernathy, the first tribute from District 12 to win the games, before Katniss. According to the author, this novel will specifically explore the propaganda used to subjugate a people.

The peculiarity of these 50 games was the quantity of tributes sent. In fact, instead of the usual two tributes, four children were chosen in each district, two boys and two girls. This meant that a total of 48 tributes would be sent into the arena and 47 would die. Everything in the arena was poisoned, except the rainwater and supplies from the Cornucopia.

The fiftieth games were a particularly brutal and momentous event in Panem’s history. Organized on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary, these Hunger Games had particular rules to accentuate the suffering of the neighborhoods and remember the dominion of the Capitol.

As regards thea ballad of the serpent and the songbird, Lionsgate has already purchased the rights to this new novel to adapt it to the cinema. And we already know the release date: the film will be released in theaters in November 2026. The studio officially announced it on its social networks:
