German Lussier’s Gizmodo says the movie as a whole can be bumpy, but great actors bring their A games, so it’s never boring to watch. Christian Bale delivers a particularly layered performance, this review says:
Much of the film’s success is due to the actors, who do a masterful job of balancing the precise tonal goal that Waititi aims for. Bale’s Gorr goes from terrifying to human to hilarious in the blink of an eye. Portman’s Foster is heroic and exciting, while hiding a very sad reality. Like the previous reviewer, many critics praised the overall performance, with many choosing Tessa Thompson for her return as Valkyrie. Brian Truitt from USE TODAY (opens in a new tab) he was one of those critics, who also liked Christian Bale as Gorr, comparing him to another classic villain:
