In flashbacks, he was a young, handsome superhero who wanted to be the next Eddie Murphy, but was targeted by a boy soldier in such extreme ways that he ended up physically deformed.

We believe that once he recovered from his injuries and secured the mask, he only took it off very rarely, Darth Vader-style. None of this is natural. And we played with it.
