A true and chilling story behind the miniseries
The lie is based on the true story of Christian Iacono, former mayor and doctor of Vence, a town in the south of France. In May 2000, his nephew Gabriel, then nine years old, accused him of rape. This accusation arises in a tense family context, marked by a conflictual separation between Gabriel’s parents.
After these serious accusations, Christian Iacono was immediately placed in pre-trial detention, despite his declarations of innocence. The 2009 trial led to a nine-year prison sentence, a verdict confirmed on appeal in 2011. Throughout this period, Christian Iacono continues to proclaim his innocenceclaiming that his nephew has been manipulated by his mother, with whom he has a conflictual relationship.
In March 2011, a major turning point occurred when Gabriel, now an adult, decided to retract his statement. He admits that he lied under the influence of his mother and the psychological pressure exerted on him. This recantation leads to the conditional release of Christian Iacono in April 2011. However, the legal battle is not over. It is necessary to wait for a new review process, a rare and difficult procedure to obtain in France, for the courts to officially recognize the miscarriage of justice.
In February 2015, after a long and painful struggle, Christian Iacono is definitively acquitted by the Assize Court of the Alpi Marittime. This decision marks the end of a difficult legal and personal ordeal that lasted more than 13 years.
