Red sun : a meeting of stars
Inside the very rich filmography ofAlain Delonwe find some rather surprising films on paper. Red sun (1971) is one. After having achieved a series of successes in France for years, the actor finds himself in the casting of this western which features a great line-up of stars. With the American Charles Bronsonthe actress born in Switzerland Ursula Andress and the Japanese Toshiro Mifune, an international cast is found in this Franco-Italian-Spanish co-production. And each one reflects a very particular image.
Charles Bronson is not yet the vigilante of the 1970s, but a regular character in war films and occasionally in westerns, as in Once upon a time in the West (1968). Ursula Andress obviously is the first James Bond girl. He found with Red sun director Terrence Young who directed it James Bond 007 vs Doctor N (1962). The director also directed Good kisses from Russia (1963) e Operation Thunder (1965), thus putting its stamp on the Sean Connery period. Finally, Toshirô Mifune was then known his films with Akira Kurosawa (they will shoot 15 together). It was also he who, a few years later, brought it Shogun (1980), well before the Disney+ version which has enjoyed recent success.
“A joyful cinematic minestrone” and a record
Getting all these personalities to coexist could have been difficult. But Terrence Young is not a beginner, he managed to propose an original work capable of mixing genres. Red sun is set in 1870. A Japanese ambassador, accompanied by two Samurai, then travels to Washington to present the President of the United States with a very valuable sword from the Emperor of Japan. Obviously the train the delegation is on is attacked by criminals led by Link (Charles Bronson) and Left (Alain Delon). If their primary objective is to recover the gold, they ultimately decide to get hold of the sword as well. At least Gauche, who doesn’t hesitate to betray Link and hurt him.

It is then Kuroda, one of the two Samurai, who treats the latter so that he can help him find Gauche and recover the sword. If they don’t arrive within 7 days, he will have to do hara-kiri. In an attempt to find Gauche, they go looking for her girlfriend, Christina (Ursula Andress) and kidnap her. And as they are about to get their hands on the criminal, the small group finds each other again attacked by the Comanche.
Red sun thus takes up classic western themes (betrayal and revenge), evokes samurai films (the question of honor) and uses all the decorum befitting these two genres, without minimizing the violence. The result is truly surprising”a joyful cinematic soup, which intertwines Indian shootouts and attacks taken from Western stories with the choreography of Japanese saber films” Jean-François Rauger wrote about him. However, the proposal convinced some of the public. At least in Japan, since then the film broke an attendance record in Tokyo at the time, finding itself scheduled in theaters for 35 consecutive weeks. In France, Red sun accumulated more than 3.3 million entriesthe seventh biggest hit of 1971.
