House of the Dragon season 2: a theory makes this scene even more heartbreaking

House of the Dragon here we go again!

Almost two years after the first season aired, the Targaryens finally return to the small screen with the second season of House of the Dragon which has just debuted on the Max platform.

And the least we can say is that the writers have not spared the viewers, with a shocking first episode that catapults us back into the war between Rhaenyra Targaryen’s clan and that of Alicent Hightower. The events take place a few hours later the tragic death of Rhaenyra’s sonLucerys Velaryon, slain by Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar, while her two cousins were engaged in battle above Storm’s End.

Vhagar managed to defeat Arrax, the dragon ridden by Lucerys, and both bodies were swept away to the sea.

In the first episode of the second season, we can see Rhaenyra arriving on the back of her dragon Syrax, heading towards the remains of Arrax, washed up on a beach. Grieved by the loss of her son, she meditates next to the remains of the animal and a cloth worn by Lucerys. In the background we can see Syrax who also seems to be hurt by pain.

Two grieving mothers?

When Rhaenyra, crying, is near Arrax’s remains, Syrax can be heard letting out a cry of pain. If it is known that Targaryen dragons are very attached to their masters, and feel the pain of their masters, an even sadder theory could also explain Syrax’s behavior.

Indeed, as one user of the platform pointed out Reddit, Syrax could be the mother of Arrax. And so it would be two grieving mothers that we can see about this moving sequence.

If George RR Martin did not confirm this theory, nor explain Arrax’s origins, the dragon eggs given to Rhaenyra’s children at birth could have come from Syrax. We know that the latter laid several clutches of dragons, and that Daybreak, Rhaena’s dragon, is confirmed as one of Syrax’s descendants.

Since Rhaenyra rode Syrax, it is reasonably assumed that Syrax’s eggs were the ones given to the children.
