Sous la Seine is no longer number 1 on Netflix France
Although it was not unanimous among viewers, the French film Under the Seine is a huge hit on Netflix. In France obviously, the feature film directed by Xavier Gens which tells the unlikely story of a shark that terrorizes the French capital, has imposed itself on the first place in the Top 10 upon its addition to the platform on June 5th.
But its success was on an international level, as the film became in just a few days the most watched French feature film of all time in the world. It is currently in fifth place among Netflix’s most watched non-English films, right behind The platform which is expected to pass within a few weeks.
But as all good things come to an end, Under the Seine has just lost its leading position in the Top 10 of Netflix France after fifteen days. And it’s another predator that has stolen its place, as the current No. 1 movie is the madcap comedy Crazy Bearwhich features a bear on drugs.
Crazy Bear: A crazy comedy based on true events
Directed by Elizabeth Banks, the film Crazy Bear (Cocaine Bear in the original version) released in 2023 tells the story of a black bear who consumes a large quantity of cocaine, following an incident involving a drug trafficker. The bear, under the influence of drugs, becomes extremely aggressive and begins to wreak havoc in a small town in Kentucky.
The film is based on a real-life incident in 1985. A drug dealer, Andrew Thornton, dropped a load of cocaine on the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia before jumping from his plane on a faulty parachute to his death. A few months later, a 79 kg black bear was found dead in the woods after ingesting approximately 34 kg of cocaine. The bear has become something of an urban legend, often nicknamed “the cocaine bear”. Although the true story ends tragically for the bear, the film takes a more fantastical and entertaining turn by imagining what would have happened if the bear had survived and become aggressive.
