LOL : the film that unites two generations

After making himself known through comedy You are so Beautiful!Liza Azuelos began working on a third feature film in the late 2000s. The title is almost generational: LOL. The film, which brings together seasoned star Sophie Marceau and young debutante Christa Theret, follows the life of sixteen-year-old Lola. This young teenager is starting a new year of high school. And, among his friends, his love stories and his increasingly heated conflicts with his mother Anne, his school year won’t be easy.

If the critical reception of LOL divided, the public received the film very positively. In fact, LOL attracts 3.6 million spectators in theaters. It is therefore the first great success of Liza Azuelos’ career. The feature film will even have the right to an American remake, with Miley Cyrus. Note this too LOL marks one of the first appearances of a young actor who would become one of the great stars of French cinema: Pierre Niney.

An abortive cult following

LOL it was appreciated by both young people and those under 50. For that? Maybe because the film contains similarities with another cult teen comedy from the ’80s : The party. In fact, in addition to the presence of Sophie Marceau, we find as subjects the turbulent evolution of a young girl with her first loves as well as her increasingly complicated dialogue with her mother. From there to thinking this LOL could be considered an unofficial sequel to The partythere is only one step.

However, the third part of the cult film was considered by director Claude Pinoteau. The one who directed the first two films he was very motivated to get me back on trackas mentioned in the entitled work Sophie Marceau, we all have something of Vic in us. Its author Pierre Mikailoff thus cites the interview with Claude Pinoteau in good morningstating:

Brigitte Fossey, Claude Brasseur and the actors would have liked this sequel. But Lisa Azuelos did it LOL without notifying us.

Officially the director had no obligation to notify anyone of her project. Unofficially, however, it must be admitted LOL has all the features of a third party The party where young Vic grew up and became a mother.
