The Emerald Forest: a classic for an entire generation
The Emerald Forest directed by John Boorman and released in 1985, it is a dramatic and ecological film inspired by a true story that left its mark on an entire generation of spectators.
The story follows Bill Markham (Powers Boothe), an American engineer tasked with building a dam in the Amazon. One day, her seven-year-old son, Tommy (Charley Boorman), is kidnapped by a native tribe. For ten years Bill desperately searches for his son in the vast Amazon forest. When he finally finds Tommy, the latter became a full member of the tribeadopting their way of life and beliefs.
The film explores the conflicts between modernity and traditional lifestyles, as well as the ecological consequences of rainforest destruction. This conflict is illustrated by difficult return attempt to Tommy’s civilization after spending ten years cut off from the world.
What happens to Charley Boorman (Tommy)?
Charley Boorman, son of director John Boorman, continued his acting career by starring primarily in his father’s films. After his notable role in The Emerald Forest, continued to work in cinema, becoming famous for his travel adventures and documentaries. In 2003, he notably starred in the French film I, César, 10 and a half years old, 1m39 by Richard Berry in which he played Mr. Fitzpatrick, Morgan’s (Mabô Kouyate) father.
Charley Boorman is best known for his motorcycle adventures around the world with actor Ewan McGregor. Their first documentary, Long ride (2004), followed their journey from London to New York through Europe, Asia and North America. This trip was followed by Long way down (2007), covering their journey from Scotland to South Africa and, more recently, from Very far away (2020), where they traveled across South America using electric motorcycles.

In addition to his travels with McGregor, Boorman has participated in other adventures such as Race to Dakar (2006), which documents his participation in the Dakar rally, e By any means (2008), where he travels from Ireland to Sydney using various local modes of transport. She has written several books chronicling her travels and adventures, and has produced numerous documentaries broadcast on various television channels around the world.
