The great series of the 2020s

Since the airing of its very first episode in July 2019 on Prime Video, the series of superheroes (or rather supervillains) The boys has established itself as one of the best television productions of the 2010s and 2020s. In four seasons, Eric Kripke’s creation has in fact convinced a huge audience with its corrupt and arrogant superheroes led by the psychopath. Patriot (Antony Starr), fought by Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and his “Boys”. Very politically charged, ultraviolent and ironic, The boys that’s how it is a big successand perhaps the best creation produced under the Prime Video banner.

The boys is the adaptation of the comic series written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Darick Robertson, published for the first time between 2006 and 2012. And since the first years of publication, The boys had piqued the interest of Hollywood, particularly with a trilogy project developed since 2008.

The director of Vice for The Boys films

In a copious interview with the creators and part of the historic casting of The boys directed by Rolling Stone, we learn that, before the series entered development in 2016, Sony was very interested in a film adaptation. A project passed in particular in the hands of the screenwriter, director and producer Adam McKay. In the late 2000s she had plans to make three films and had even finished the screenplay for the first film. Unsuccessful, as the studios abandoned the project in 2012. Darick Robertson explains:

I wouldn’t change anything about how it happened, because the show is incredible. But Adam was doing something really interesting. It’s just that it was 2008, not 2018. I just think the studios weren’t ready at the time.

Finally, Adam McKay has thrived with blockbuster films (The big bet, Vice, Don’t look up) and also in the world of series he achieved great success with the production of the series Succession.
