The Count of Monte Cristo arrives in theaters

We will be able to discover it in theaters from June 28, 2024 The Count of Monte Cristo, a great adventure film adapted from the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas. In this film, directed by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, Pierre Niney plays the protagonist role, that ofEdmond Dantes, a young sailor betrayed and unjustly imprisoned who, after 14 years of detention in the Château d’If prison, will get his hands on a treasure. Having become rich and powerful, he will then take revenge on all those who imprisoned him.

For those who are not familiar with the work of Alexandre Dumas, the question arises: The Count of Monte Cristo is the continuation of or has a relationship with The Three Musketeers ? In other words, what connections exist between this new film and the diptych released in 2023, The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan AND The Three Musketeers: Milady ?

The same team at the helm

The public rest assured, you don’t need to have seen it The Three Musketeers discover The Count of Monte Cristo. If the two stories are created by the same author – and both appear starting from 1844 -, and Alexandre Dumas develops the same spirit and the same style, the two stories are separated by almost 200 years. The characters are therefore not the same the two stories are perfectly autonomous.

However, there is a very strong coherence between these three films, since the same teams made them, and we even find an actor in the casting of all three. In fact, Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte, screenwriters of the diptych The Three Musketeershe wrote and accomplished The Count of Monte Cristo (Martin Bourboulon directed the two films The Three Musketeers).

The directors are surrounded The Count of Monte Cristo Of the same talents who worked on the 2023 diptych. We thus find Patrick Schmitt as artistic director, Stéphane Taillasson as scenery, Thierry Delettre as costumes and Nicolas Bolduc as photography. As for The Three Musketeers, the editing is entrusted to Célia Lafitedupont and the sound to David Rit. The only noteworthy change is that the music previously entrusted to Guillaume Roussel is composed by Jérôme Rebotier.

In all three films there is an actor, Patrick Millewhich embodies the Count of Chalais in the films The Three Musketeers and Baron Danglars In The Count of Monte Cristo.

The French “superhero” franchise is on the rise

As Dimitri Rassam, producer of these Alexandre Dumas adaptations, indicated to Le Figaro in 2020, the ambition of these films is “as a response to American franchises“. So if The Count of Monte Cristo it has no connection in its history with that of the films The Three Musketeersit’s fine with the same ambition and inside the same artistic universe that are produced.

So if this new film isn’t a continuation of the previous two, it still is further developments of this universe. A universe that should soon welcome other films, starting from the end of The Three Musketeers: Milady strongly suggests that this story is far from over…
