British Prime Minister Boris Johnson agrees to resign

British media are reporting that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has agreed to step down, ending an unprecedented political crisis over his future.

In recent days, Johnson has rejected calls from his cabinet to resign over ethical scandals. But he relented after more than 40 ministers resigned from the government and told him to go.

It was unclear on Thursday whether Johnson will remain in office until the Conservative Party chooses a new leader to replace him as prime minister, but the BBC said he would remain in office until the autumn.

Britain’s Treasury chief Nadeem Zahavi called on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to step down on Thursday, just 36 hours after he nominated him to the post, and another newly appointed minister resigned. Zahavi said Johnson knew the “right thing to do” was to “leave now”. Zahavi was named Tuesday night to replace Rishi Sunak, who resigned saying he could no longer support Johnson after a series of ethical scandals.

Johnson made a name for himself as a populist who vowed to “deliver Brexit” and helped his Conservative party to a landslide victory in the 2019 election.

Kenneth Branagh stars as Johnson as he struggles to cope with the coronavirus pandemic, Brexit, as well as conflicts in his personal and professional life in the drama Sky. this is englandwhich airs in the fall.
