House of the Dragon Season 2: Who is Alys Rivers, the Mysterious Witch?

After noticing this Game of Thrones reference in season 2 episode 3, fans of House of the Dragon were also marked by the appearance of a mysterious characterwho seems to have a lot in common with Melisandre, the Scarlet Witch who appeared in the main series.

Alys Rivers is a mysterious and charismatic character who appears in the novels Fire and Blood by George R.R. Martin which serves as the basis for House of the Dragon. Alys Rivers is described as a woman of great beautydark-eyed and attractive. She is known to be a healer with mystical powers, often considered a witch by those who fear her. She is said to be able to see the future (she also tells Daemon “you will die in these places”).

Regarding her origins, George R. R. Martin writes that she was a bastard born to Lord Lyonel Strong with an unknown wife. According to Grand Maester Munkun, she was “a servant girl interested in potions”, while Septon Eustace claimed she was a “woodland witch”. A more fantastical version comes from the jester Mushroom, who claims that Alys was of an earlier generation and had served as a nanny for the Strong family.

He adds that Alys was an enchantress bathe in girls’ blood to stay young. Although the first two consider these claims exaggerated, they agree that Alys looked “surprisingly young for her age”, being “at least forty” at the beginning of A Dance with Dragons, when she appears in the series. A statement that brings her closer to another enigmatic character game of Thrones : Melisandre.

The Lover of Harrenhal

Originally from Harrenhal, Alys Rivers is the mistress of this legendary and feared castle, a strategic location for the armies of Rhaenyra and Alicent. If she is first bound to Daemon Targaryen, who bewitches her and gives her Nightmare VisionsIt is with another Targaryen that she will use her charm for a currently unknown goal.

In an interview given to Entertainment Weeklyactress Gayle Rankin, who plays Alys Rivers in House of the Dragonsaid that the character would have “a lot of power” over the men in the series, and in particular over Daemon. A behavior that also echoes Mélisandre, the red witch of game of Throneswhich had a huge influence on history.
