Paul Schrader took over, but the producers found his version too thriller-like and not very scary. He was then replaced by Renny Harlinwhich gave the film a more conventional, horror-oriented approach. Schrader’s version, considered an alternative, was released in 2005 under the name Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist.
