House of the Dragon Season 2: A Shocking Death in Episode 4, Things Get Serious

House of the Dragon S2 Episode 4: The Dragons Begin to Fall

With the airing of episode 4 this Monday, July 8, we are already halfway through season 2 of House of the Dragon. And after a first shocking death at the beginning of the season, a new tragic disappearance has marked fans of the series broadcast on Max.

In this episode, Aegon II discovers with shock and anger that his brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Ser Criston Cole (Fabian Frankel) are orchestrating the war effort without his consent. In fact, discovers that the attack on the castle of Repos-des-Freux is already underway. Aemond, speaking in Valyrian, challenges his brother by pointing out his lack of skill and ignorance of military preparations, which exacerbates tensions between them.

Aegon, humiliated and desperate, turns to his mother Alicent (Olivia Cooke) for comfort. However, she sternly rebukes him, reminding him that wearing the crown does not automatically grant him the wisdom to lead.

For his part, Rhaenyra Returns to Dragonstonewhere she faces a rebellion from her own council, including her son Jace (Harry Collett), who is shocked to learn that she went to King’s Landing to meet Alicent without informing anyone.

Rhaenyra, determined to take matters into her own hands, plans to send her dragon Syrax to Rooks’ Rest, but meets stiff opposition. Eventually, Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) offers to go with her dragon Meleys, the Red Queen, as she is an experienced fighter. This choice will prove crucial, but also tragic.

Farewell Rhaenys, the Queen Who Never Was

The battle at Rookrest is the climax of the episode. Rhaenys and Meleys arrive just as Cole’s attack begins. He unleashes flames on the battlefield, sowing panic among the soldiers. But Cole was expecting this offensive, and so he set an ambush. Aemond and his immense dragon Vhagar are ready, hiding nearby in a wood.

When Aegon, annoyed at not being invited to the battle, appears with his dragon Sunfire, the situation takes a dramatic turn. Cole is shocked by the king’s presence, while Aemond stings his brother as an idiot. A fierce aerial battle ensues between Meleys and Sunfyre. Vhagar’s superiority becomes evident when Aemond orders his dragon to breathe flame, destroying Sunfyre and sending Aegon and Rhaenys crashing to the ground. Aegon’s fall is particularly terrible, with his armor melting from his skin, leaving him gravely wounded (but still alive?).

But it is Rhaenys’ sacrifice that is the highlight of this dramatic episode. Riding Meleys one last time, the latter did everything to defend Rhaenyra’s honor. A sacrifice that shocked the fans House of the Dragon.
