Tonight on TV: This Crazy Comedy With Jonathan Cohen Was a Huge Failure

Pop Redemption : metalhead’s journey

Pop Redemption (2012) had everything to become a cult comedy. First of all, a quality casting with, in the foreground, the amazing Julien Doré who, after being certified gold for his second album Bichon, played a loser singer in a black metal band. Unlikely and at the same time predictable for the winner of the Nouvelle Star 2007. At his side, we found Jonathan CohenGrégory Gadebois, Yacine Belhousse, Audrey Fleurot and even Alexandre Astier (present in the script). Enough to attract people, even if at the time Jonathan Cohen and Audrey Fleurot did not have the same popularity as today – he with The flameshe with HPI.

Finally, the concept of Pop Redemption promised a crazy musical comedy with situations more burlesque than the other. The film follows the dead MaKabesa black metal band that never made it big. As a result, except for Alex, the singer, the other members of the band have lost their motivation and want to leave the band. To convince them to continue, Alex then tells them that they will be able to play at Hellfest for an unexpected concert. On the road, however, troubles follow one another and following a misunderstanding, the gendarmerie will hunt them down.

A failure at every level

Despite good intentions and pop culture references, Martin Le Gall’s road comedy is not at all convincing. For his first feature film, the director suffered a bitter failure in theatersonly with 88,444 tickets sold (through Assigned). Extremely low numbers. Especially since Pop Redemption was distributed by Gaumont in more than 200 theaters in France. But from the third week of activity, the comedy was shown in only about twenty theaters. A big flop for an estimated budget of 3.9 million euros…

The fact remains that sometimes, even if the public is not there, the critics are there to identify a work that deserves better. This was the case of Scott Pellegrinoa box office failure, defended by critics and since then considered a cult film rediscovered thanks to DVD and streaming releases. However, the story was not the same for Pop Redemptionthat they have accumulated negative opinions in the press.

In his criticism, First he didn’t mince his words when he wrote: “There is no reason to undergo this grueling journey provincial of a group of hard rockers”. TéléCinéObs was equally severe, declaring: “Nothing to be saved in this sick comedy.” Without forgetting the cold opinion of World : “This principle, which consists in placing a crazy comedy in an extreme but real cultural context, has produced very good comedies in the United States. It is not like that here.” Less difficult, Movie Files finally wrote: “Pop Redemption takes on its crazy side, but unfortunately remains a little too “cute” in human terms“.
