One of Arnaud Desplechin’s best films
At the turn of 2020, Arnaud Desplechin blows hot and cold. Following the excellent Roubaix, a lightreleased in 2019, it is the adaptation of a novel by Philip Roth in 2021 Deceit then it does not convince either the critics or the public. But not enough to disconcert the French filmmaker who, the following year, produced a beautiful family drama Brotherpresented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
This time the French critics are almost unanimous, with the daily press and the specialized monthlies emphasizing the “beauty”, the “clarity” and the great mastery of this melodrama (here is our review). A story of visceral hatred that a brother and a sister feel for each other (and for themselves), Brother shines for its writing, the light and natural settings of Roubaix so dear to Arnaud Desplechin, and of course the highly inspired interpretations of Melvil Poupaud and Marion Cotillard.
And if the film is a critical success and a nice addition to their respective filmographies, it was not easy for the casting. In particular for Melvil Poupaud, mistreated by Marion Cotillard during filming…

Diva’s whims? A condescending attitude of a world icon towards French cinema and its culture? Not at all. If the atmosphere was terribly cold between Marion Cotillard and Melvil Poupaud during the filming of Brotherit was actually about feeding as best as possible the hatred between their characters. Marion Cotillard told it like this the set of Télé Matin.
In the film I needed to distance myself from Melvil. It wasn’t necessarily easy, because I didn’t feel it. It was a real need I had to not create familiarity with him. Especially because in the film we rarely meet. I needed to create a sort of opposing magnetic field. It was a relief at the end of the shoot, when I was able to go and explain to him why I had distanced myself so much. And he understood it very well.

So, if Melvil Poupaud could have suffered from Marion Cotillard’s antipathy during their collaboration on BrotherIt’s because she refused to step out of her character off-camera, to generate as many sensations as possible that would allow the screen to capture hatred as monumental as it is mysterious between these two characters. A particular method, increasingly criticized for the atmosphere on the set that it manages to generate, but which often gives impressive results.
