Tonight on TV: A Mel Gibson-Starring Twist Thriller That Was Never Released in Theaters

On the Line: What is this gripping thriller starring Mel Gibson?

After having gained experience on NRJ as a presenter between 1996 and 2010, Romuald Boulanger launched himself into feature film production in 2020 with the film Connected (released directly on Prime Video). Two years later, he took a giant leap by writing and directing the thriller On the line with Mel Gibson. And the synopsis is largely inspired by his past as a radio host.

Therefore, the plot of the film takes place in a Los Angeles radio stationwhere Mel Gibson plays Elvis Cooney, a radio host known for his outspokenness and his no-holds-barred approach to controversial topics. One night, while hosting his regular show, Elvis receives a terrifying call from an anonymous listener who threatens to kill his family on the air. This mysterious caller imposes a cruel treasure hunt in which any mistake could cost the lives of those close to him.

Faced with this threat, Elvis Cooney must demonstrate composure and insight to thwart the terrorist’s plans. But as the film progresses, Elvis realizes that the listener may not be who he claims to be, and the ending reveals the whole truth.

The filming ofOn the line took place in Paris, in the summer of 2021, but the film was never released in French cinemasIt was released directly online on VOD (on Canal+) in January 2023.

What do viewers think?

Viewers’ opinions are quite divided on this matter. On the lineas confirmed by the score of 2.4/5 awarded by our colleagues atAlloCine and its score of 5.4/10 asideIMDB. We can thus read:

A masterful first part that draws its strength from a closed session of 8 sessions taken to the extreme based exclusively on Mel Gibson’s performance and the principle of ‘don’t show’. Then comes the second part, much more generic, as we have seen in a series of films, the classic game of cat and mouse, and there it clearly descends to a lower level.

A film that seems quite good in its first part with Mel GIBSON doing well in his role, except that it goes completely haywire in the second part and ends up in total absurdity.

Pretty good find, a nice surprise (I hadn’t expected the first twist, the second one is obvious instead).

Not a masterpiece but a good suspense film where the ending can surprise

Very nice film that deserves to be known. Good suspense and above all an unexpected result that will surprise more than one person.
