Paris 2024 Olympics Closing Ceremony Celebrates Achievements and Begins Countdown to Next Games in Los Angeles

The closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics was marked by a spectacle that combined the energy of the Games with French culture, the Stade de France was the stage for the Olympic torch relay to Los Angeleswhich will host the next Games in 2028.

Léon Marchand carries the Olympic lantern

The French swimmer Leon Marchandone of the biggest stars of the Paris 2024 Games with four golds and one bronze, opened the closing ceremony by carrying the Olympic lantern. Marchand, cheered by the crowd, brought the Jarcade from Tuileries to the Stade de France, symbolizing the closing of the Games in the French capital.

Phoenix leads closing show

The French band Phoenix was responsible for the closing musical show, entertaining the audience with hits such as “Lisztomania” and “1901”. During the performance, Phoenix welcomed DJ Kavinsky, Belgian singer Angèle and Cambodian rapper VannDa to the stage. The band Air also made an appearance, playing “Playground Love” alongside Phoenix’s lead singer, Thomas Mars.

Tom Cruise rappels down to deliver Olympic flag to Los Angeles

The actor Tom Cruise made a spectacular entrance, rappelling down from the top of the Stade de France to deliver the Olympic flag to the Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass. This moment officially marked the transition of the Games to the Californian city, which will host the Olympics in 2028. Cruise, known for his stunts in films, also starred in a segment in which he simulated a flag handover over the sign of Hollywood.

The singer HER. was chosen to represent the United States during the Olympic baton passing ceremony. In a live performance, HER sang the United States anthem as the American flag was raised at the Stade de France. Dressed in white, the artist also played the theme of Mission Impossible on his guitar, linking his performance to Tom Cruise’s participation in the ceremony.

Brazilian athletes stand out at the closing ceremony

The Brazilian delegation also stood out at the ceremony, with the gold medalists in beach volleyball, Duda and Ana Patriciacarrying the Brazilian flag during the athletes’ parade. Brazil ended its participation in the Games with a total of 20 medals, including 3 gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze, with a highlight on the number of women’s achievements, which totaled 12 medals.

While the ceremony was taking place in Paris, a simultaneous celebration was held in Los Angeles, marking the start of the city’s Olympic cycle. The singer Billie Eilish presented his music Birds of a Featherfollowed by the rapper Snoop Doggwho sang Drop It Like It’s Hot next to Dr. Dre. The band Red Hot Chili Peppers also participated, playing Can’t Stop on a stage set up in Venice Beach, one of Los Angeles’ iconic locations.

Yseult closes ceremony with ‘My Way’ and fireworks show

The French singer Yseultwas in charge of closing the Paris ceremony with an emotional performance by My Way. The closing show culminated with a fireworks display over the Stade de France.

Last podium and tributes to the athletes

The last podium of the Paris Olympic Games was dedicated to the women’s marathon, with medals being awarded for the first time at the closing ceremony. The Dutch Sifan Hassan got the gold, Tigst Assefa from Ethiopia with silver, and Hellen Obiri from Kenya with the bronze.
