The musician met the actor on a plane after a night of drinking
Hozier remembered the day he met Cillian Murphy. During a show at the Xcel Energy Center in the United States earlier this month, he gave details about his meeting with the actor Oppenheimer (2023).
The musician said he met up with a “great old friend” and they ended up “drinking a lot throughout the night”, as they usually did. Still, Hozier need to catch a plane the next morning.
“I stood up really quickly — and I’m pretty tall. I’ve always been told, ‘If I fell, I’d be halfway home,'” he said of his post-drinking morning. “I was walking really fast and all of a sudden, ‘boom!’ My head hit the window really hard.”

Hozierthen walked “straight into a wall” and, although he was “in a bad way”, he managed to get to the airport. “I was shaken. You know, the kind of hangover where you’re shaking,” he continued.
“I looked to my left on the plane and saw a famous Irish actor. I’m also susceptible to celebrity shock, where you watch someone you’ve seen a thousand times on screen and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, that’s a famous person.'”
“When I saw that Cillian Murphy was on my left…”, he added. Murphy was approaching to introduce himself to Hozierwhen the singer took off his hat and noticed that he had hurt his head more than he had imagined.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is wet,'” he recalled. “So I’m on a plane, looking at my fingers, bleeding a little bit… I turn to the left, and Cillian Murphy is crouched down next to my seat and says, ‘How are you?’. I tried to remain calm. He was so sweet and so kind.”
Hozier finally revealed that the moment inspired the lyrics of “Too Sweet”. “It’s the line: ‘I aim low, I aim true and the ground’s where I go’ [‘Eu miro baixo, eu miro certo e o chão é aonde eu vou, em tradução livre’]”, he confessed. “I never saw him again. I didn’t have the courage to tell him at that time how bad I was.”
