Hero of the first work and enhanced by the exceptional interpretation of Russell Crowe, Maximus Decimus Meridius will obviously not be present in Gladiator 2. It makes sense, given his fate at the end of the first film. Ridley Scott recently justified his decision without even involving the actor in the development of his new film.

Ridley Scott takes advantage of Russell Crowe’s lack of involvement

A little over two months after the release of the feature film, Empire has chosen to dedicate its new issue to Gladiator 2. The magazine interviewed Ridley Scott in particular about his film. The latter mentioned the fact of without consulting Russell Crowe while he was developing this new story. And his answer is, as often happens with the director, quite funny:

I think he’s still one of the best actors in the world and I think we have a good relationship. I hope so, anyway. As long as he doesn’t start complaining about not being consulted. Why would I do that? He’s dead!

Ridley Scott therefore did not consider it useful to discuss with Russell Crowe Gladiator 2since Maximus died in the first film and the sequel focuses on another character. For his part, the actor admitted during an interview Collider in April 2023 to be “slightly jealous” of this new film. But he had assured that the first one held “a special place” in his heart.

An obvious story

In his interview with EmpireRidley Scott also briefly mentioned the story of Gladiator 2. He explained that the film’s creative team opted for a scenario that seemed obvious to him : “Actually, the plot was right under our noses. I think it was so close to our noses that we thought it was too simple.”

Anyway, Ridley Scott I really liked the final result. A few days ago, the filmmaker said that his new feature film was simply “the best thing” what did he doWe will have to wait a little more than two months to form an opinion on the matter.
