Nicolas Winding Refn finally returns to the cinema
It’s an understatement to say that we’ve had a hard time following Nicolas Winding Refn in recent years. The Danish director, however, had made an excellent debut with the trilogy Pusher (1996, 2004, 2005) before becoming increasingly noticed outside its borders Bronson (2008)worn by the imposing Tom Hardy. But the real turning point in the director’s career came in 2011 with Guide. A thriller with multiple influences, featuring Ryan Gosling as a stuntman by day and a robbery driver by night. The rest of the time he meets his neighbor played by Carey Mulligan. While a special relationship quietly develops between them, the return from prison of the young woman’s husband and the arrival of a mobster in the driver’s life will turn everything upside down.
Guide quickly became a cult film. Nicolas Winding Refn’s aesthetics and his musical choices leave an indelible impression. The director later reunited with Ryan Gosling for the film noir Only God forgives (2013), much less pleasant, indeed even pretentious, some would say. So, it was the world of fashion that was dissected by the director with horror The Neon Demon (2016).
Since then, Nicolas Winding Refn has moved away from the big screen, favoring the series format. As with Too old to die young (2019), or soon with The Club of Five (2024). For years, the director believed that “cinema is deadBut it seems that he has finally decided to return to theaters with a film.
“Lots of glitter, sex and violence” for his next film
It was during the Venice Film Festival that he announced his “return” to the cinema in an interview given to Varietyeight years later The Neon Demon. A project that will be shot in Tokyo and in English and Japanese. This return would be mainly due to Nicolas Winding Refn an act of “defiance”given the current times which he considers “chaotic”.
It’s a really interesting time to be making films, because things are so chaotic. Going back and remaking a feature film for the cinema is not like starting from scratch. Because with all the changes that have happened in our societies in the last five years and the changes in technology, it seems like the right thing to do.
Nicolas Winding Refn’s next film is reportedly already financed and Filming is expected to take place next year. The director did not provide any details about the plot, but simply indicated that there will be”lots of glitter, sex and violence“. Refn too, therefore, a priori in line with his latest feature film. Enough to please his fans, and less so his detractors…
