Joker: Folie a due disappoints
Presented where its predecessor, the formidable Joker of 2019, had triumphed, Joker: Folie a due It was expected to be one of the most important events of the 81st Venice Film Festival. 5 years ago, Joker caused a sensation, leaving the Lido with the Golden Lion and a critical plebiscite. Unfortunately for its following, it seems it has not lived up to its expectations. And that, for the moment, is it Joker 2 should leave Venice with above all very mixed reviews…
Indeed, the day after its presentation, this is clear Joker: Folie a duea musical film in which Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn joins Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker, has not convinced much. Starting with David Rooney for The Hollywood Journalist which evokes a film”frustrating“, “unequal“, and writes:
For a film lasting 2h15, Joker: Folie a due It seems a bit light, even tasteless. (…) It attempts very broad associations, from musical films of the golden age of Hollywood to essays by authors like “Coup de coeur”, without managing to find a model that gives it a real form or structure.
On the side ofIndieWireDavid Ehrlich is even more severe: “”Joker: Folie à Deux” simply tap dances for most of its uninteresting running time, stringing together a series of disappointing musical numbers that are either too explicit or too loosely tied to its characters to convey anything.“
Variety he was not convinced by this “Folie à deux” either, judging as follows:
Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga star in a crazy jukebox musical, but it’s not bold enough and it doesn’t let Joker play his role as the Joker enough.
A counterpoint that leaves you perplexed
For others, Todd Phillips’ film wants to be too “smart” and has chosen to contradict the audience’s expectations. This is, for example, the opinion of Nicholas Barber of BBC who judges itdisappointing” and writes that: “Todd Phillips seems to be saying that if you were fooled by Arthur Fleck’s messianic portrayal in the first game, then this one is laughing at you.“
Same story on the side of Vanity Fairconvinced that the film consists of:
A middle finger to anyone who might find something relevant in this sequel.
Among the convinced, Empire Magazine judges, in the words of John Nugent, that the film is: “a musical love story as sweet and seductive as possible between two murderous psychopaths. Its strange approach will not please all comic book fans, but it finds its own strange and tragic hope.“
For The Independentby whom Geoffrey Macnab said he had been seduced, ““Joker: Folie à Deux” is as edgy and unsettling as its predecessor, playing up the idea of modern American cities as terrifying powder kegs perpetually on the verge of exploding.“
So, without this being a bad thing – and perhaps it was the authors’ intention, Joker 2 divides very widelyfar from the unanimous reception of Joker that had started him on the road to great critical and commercial success. We will soon be able to judge for ourselves, since the film arrives in French theaters on October 2, 2024.
