Born in 1967, Laurent Tirard first nurtured his passion for cinema through his studies at the prestigious New York University. After starting his career as a script reader for Warner Bros. in Los Angeles, he honed his vision by becoming a journalist for Studio Magazine. For seven years he interviewed the greatest directors, an exercise that allowed him to learn the subtleties of film direction and storytelling.
His career as a screenwriter began in television before moving to film, where he distinguished himself with a style that combines comedy, drama and reflection on the human being. This dual approach to writing and directing has allowed him to build a solid reputation in the French film scene.

Laurent Tirard makes himself known to the general public with Lies and betrayals and more if affinity… in 2004, a romantic comedy that lays the foundations of his narrative style: a mixture of subtle humor and reflection on human relationships. This initial success was followed by Moliere in 2007, a historical comedy in which Tirard imagines the youth of the famous playwright, combining fiction and historical elements.
However, it is with Little Nicholas (2009) which is experiencing a real popular triumph. Adaptation of the famous books by René Goscinny and Jean-Jacques Sempé, the film has fascinated a large audience by restoring the atmosphere and humor of the original work. Building on this success, it has produced a sequel, Little Nicola’s holidays (2014), confirming his ability to transpose French literary classics to the big screen.
In 2012, Tirard tackled another pillar of French culture with Asterix and Obelix: In Her Majesty’s Service. If this film has received a more mixed reception, this is a testament to the director’s ambition, ready to take on great cinematic challenges.
His film The speech (2020), adapted from Fabcaro’s novel, illustrates a return to a more intimate work. This feature film, centered on the doubts and hesitations of a man in deep reflection on his life and relationships, was well received by critics for its sense of nuance and sensitivity.
We also owe the comedies to him The Hero’s Return (2018) and A man equal to the task (2016), worn by Jean Dujardin.
His latest film, Only heaven! was released in theaters in February 2023.
