Ridley Scott Tells the Story of the Gucci Family

Gucci HouseDirected by Ridley Scott, it is a biographical drama inspired by the true story of the famous Gucci fashion empire and the murder of Maurizio Gucci, orchestrated by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. Released in 2021, the film is brought forward by a prestigious castingincluding Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Al Pacino and our national Camille Cottin. The film delves behind the scenes of one of the most influential families in Italian fashion and exposes the internal conflicts, rivalries and struggles for control of the house of Gucci.

Lady Gaga plays Patrizia Reggiani, a complex and ambiguous character whose boundless ambition and passionate love for Maurizio Gucci (played by Adam Driver) lead her to a descent into hell. This gradual transformation from a woman in love to a ruthless killer is at the heart of the plot. The film explores the dynamic between Patrizia and the members of the Gucci family, and highlights how family tensions, personal ambitions and betrayals led to tragic consequences.

Lady Gaga, total immersion in the shoes of Patrizia Reggiani

To play Patrizia Reggiani, Lady Gaga adopted an extremely immersive acting method, choosing to remain in her character’s shoes for the entire duration of the filming. She was particularly inspired by a real personal trauma. This approach allowed her to capture all the nuances of the character: the passionate love she feels for Maurizio, her thirst for power, but also the jealousy and hatred that take hold of her. This process led her to keep a voluntary distance with colleagues, in particular with Camille Cottin, who plays Paola Franchi, Maurizio Gucci’s new partner after his divorce from Patrizia.

In the film, Patrizia sees Paola as a threat and this animosity must have been palpably felt on screen. To reinforce this tension, Lady Gaga decided to snub Camille Cottin for the entire duration of filming. She explained to him that, to remain faithful to her character, she would not speak to him outside of the scenes, to maintain this dynamic of hostility.

Camille Cottin professionally snubbed

While that decision may seem cold, Camille Cottin described Lady Gaga as extremely respectful in her approach. “She did it in a lovely way,” she explained upon the film’s release.

The French actress, who plays Maurizio Gucci’s partner after his divorce from Patrizia, expressed her admiration for her partner’s rigor and total commitment to his role. Camille Cottin, who had never worked with Lady Gaga before, admitted to being struck by her seriousness and concentration on set. “I have enormous admiration and respect for her,” she added, noting that this method of acting helped make the confrontation scenes between their characters more authentic and intense.
