Denzel Washington is monstrous American Gangster

The career of Denzel Washington is immense. We can no longer count the actor’s extraordinary performances, under the guidance of renowned directors. We could talk about his four collaborations with Spike Lee. But perhaps it was in front of the camera of two brothers that he proved to be most charismatic. Of his five films with Tony Scott we especially remember The Man on Fire (2004) and Déjà vu (2006). With Ridley Scott there will soon be Gladiator 2 (November 13 in theaters), which already promises to be memorable. Before that, the director had directed it American Gangster (2007). Denzel Washington plays a real criminal, Frank Lucas, and delivers a great cinematic moment with a cult line for fans of the actor.

Based on the article The Return of Superfly by Mark Jacobson, Ridley Scott’s film shows the rise in crime and drug trafficking in New York in the late 60s. An upheaval brought by Frank Lucas who took advantage of the presence of American troops in Vietnam recover pure heroin and resell his drug at a much lower price than the competition. Inspector Richie Roberts, played by Russell Crowewill then do everything to stop him. But the arrest of Frank Lucas will above all reveal significant corruption within the police and the DEA thanks to Frank’s collaboration.

Without being Ridley Scott’s most notable film, American Gangster It remains a well-executed thriller. The real Frank Lucas would have greatly appreciated the film, just specify that a small part of the work was true. The rest is fiction for dramatic effect.

A “My man” we never get tired of

American Gangster It was a success upon its theatrical release, grossing $266 million in revenue in the world. The film owes much to the presence of Denzel Washington, who tried to bring out the personality of Frank Lucas rather than imitate him. For this reason, the actor was able to meet the former gangster and learn directly from him.

I did not try to imitate him, but to bring out his charm, which is the dominant trait of his personality. I only asked him not to divulge any information that could force me to testify against him!

This fascinating aspect emerges in particular in a line that Denzel Washington repeats several times in the feature film. A “My man“(My Boyfriend) which he blurts out sometimes with enthusiasm, sometimes with admiration towards the people he makes deals with. It is here that we notice the variety of the actor’s acting, capable of expressing these two words in different ways and of saying much more through his attitude. And if the repetition of this phrase throughout the film could, in the long run, become ridiculous, the winner is obviously Denzel Washington’s class. The proof is with the following compilation:
