James Cameron has a major film project and it’s not tied to Avatar

James Cameron wants to make a very different film after Avatar

Almost fifteen years have passed since then James Cameron he devotes much of his time to the saga Avatar. Even more so if we consider the fact that the filmmaker began working on his first work in 1994. And while the sequel toAvatar (2009) took thirteen years to come out, several films are in the making, starting with Avatar: Fire and Ashscheduled for December 2025. Afterwards, James Cameron will complete the fourth and fifth feature films of the saga, expected for 2029 and 2031 respectively.

Suffice it to say, we’ll probably have to wait a while before we see the director of Titanic (1997) embark on another adventure. However, the wait may be worth it when we see James Cameron’s next project, outside of the saga Avatar. Second Expirationthe director would have bought the rights to adapt the books The Last Train from Hiroshima (2015) and Ghosts of Hiroshima by Carlo Pellegrino. The second is scheduled for publication in August 2025 in the United States. This is 80 years later the dropping of two atomic bombs in JapanIt is precisely on this drama that the story will focus.

The story of a survivor of two atomic bombs

It’s under the title Last train from Hiroshima that James Cameron will adapt the two books, but in a single feature film. He will say it like this the true story of a Japanese who survived both bombings during World War II. After the explosion of Hiroshima (August 6, 1945), the man took a train to Nagasaki where another bomb was dropped three days later. Author Charles Pellegrino used survivor testimonies to describe these events and their aftermath. James Cameron had wanted to direct this story for over 20 years. He spoke to Deadline about meeting one of the survivors several years ago.

I met Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a survivor of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a few days before his death. He was in the hospital. He was sharing his personal story with us, so I have to. I can’t walk away from him.

James Cameron would be ready to start production as soon as the saga is finished Avatar will give him some time. Therefore, it is difficult to say whether James Cameron is waiting for the releaseAvatar 5 in 2031 (he will then be 77 years old) to face Last train from Hiroshimaor if he will be able to film this project between two works of the saga. However, it will be interesting to see James Cameron tackle this story. On the one hand, finding him on another external project Avatar (the previous one is Titanichis latest fiction film). On the other hand, seeing an American director’s approach to this Japanese trauma. Finally, the feature film could be a perfect complement to Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan.
